This is a limited edition, signed print of my ‘Ancient Wood III’ pencil and watercolour drawing. It is a beautifully detailed drawing of sunlight coming through a dappled canopy in an ancient woodland, with a gorgeous old beech tree by the path. The original drawing was done in pencil, with a little colour in the leaves added with watercolour.
Walking through woodland with the sunshine shimmering through the leaves is one of my most favourite things to do. I can’t seem to stop drawing trees at the moment. This tree-scape was drawn at the Haining in Selkirk in the Scottish Borders.
There are just 50 of these larger size prints available.
Size: It is printed on A3 size paper: 297 x 420 mm (11.7 x 16.5 in). The printed image itself is 11 inches square.
It will be packaged carefully in a protective envelope to keep it flat for transit.
ABOUT THE PRINTS
The print will be digitally printed on smooth matte archival paper using special pigment inks. The special inks ensure there is no fading over time.
This print is part of a limited edition of 50 prints. This means that once all 50 prints have sold then there won’t be any more printed. The print will be signed in pencil along with the edition number e.g. 7/50.
The art prints are all drawn, scanned, printed & hand assembled in my studio in the Scottish Borders. The original drawings are inspired by the little corner of the world I’m lucky enough to inhabit. I draw in pencil, biro and watercolour, filling my sketchbook with drawings and notes, and working on bigger pencil drawings back in the studio. My work is all about connection: connection with nature, connection with each other.

Degas thought that drawing was “the artist’s most direct and spontaneous expression” and that it is “not what one sees but what one can make others see”. Anyone who has ever walked through woodland, ancient or not, will simply love this beautifully detailed drawing. The trees – so embedded in mythology and folklore – and the little touches of colour in the leaves draw you in. You can almost smell that aroma of damp wood and hear the leaves rustling. The drawing makes me happy every time I look at it.
